Philanthropic Advisory Services

Philanthropic support has a unique ability to mitigate climate change by investing nimble, risk-tolerant capital into key policy, advocacy, and technology solutions that fill gaps the government, private sector, and markets are unable to address. However, only a small portion of philanthropic giving is currently devoted to climate solutions. In 2020, climate and environmental giving accounted for 2.2 percent of global philanthropic spending, and less than half that amount specifically supported energy or climate. Existing and new philanthropic dollars must be strategically deployed to support high-impact solutions that secure lasting emissions reductions.

Our work

Energy Innovation’s Philanthropic Advisory Services team supports the firm’s philanthropic clients, including individuals and foundations, to accelerate the transition to clean energy and reduce emissions in the highest emitting energy sectors—electricity,  transportation, buildings, and industry—in the highest emitting countries at speed and scale. Grantmaking decisions are data-driven and informed by the best available science and expertise of our partners and grantees. Funding priorities include support for technical analysis, informed advocacy, legal analysis, private-public partnerships, and policymaker education.

Our team partners with clients to develop strategic funding objectives, informed by an analysis of emissions sources, the current policy and market landscape, and intervention opportunities. Our team also provides grantmaking support, managing grants throughout their lifecycle.

Philanthropic Advisory Services does not accept unsolicited proposals.

Electrification

Replacing technologies and systems that run on fossil fuels with alternatives like electric vehicles, heat pumps, and induction stoves that run on clean electricity is a proven way to reduce pollution and decarbonize the economy. Scaling up electrification across sectors requires a multi-faceted approach at the federal, state, and local levels.

Industry

Industrial sector decarbonization is critical to achieve a livable climate future. Activities like manufacturing and construction generate roughly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions when including emissions from electricity and heat purchased by industry – more than any other economic sector. Fortunately, a combination of promising technologies and well-designed policy now make it possible to achieve a net zero industrial sector globally by 2050-2070.
