Grid Reliability In The Clean Energy Transition
Electricity demand is rising, although how much and how fast remains an open question. New data centers, increased domestic manufacturing, and electrification in buildings, transportation, and industry means we need more electricity. But rising demand is happening right when expensive fossil plants are retiring and outdated grid equipment needs updating – 70 percent of transmission lines and transformers are at least 30 years old. Clean energy helps keep the lights on, and this research shows how to plan and operate a reliable grid in the context of the clean energy transition.
