Sonia Aggarwal
Vice President

Sonia Aggarwal is Energy Innovation’s Vice President, where she leads the firm’s policy and analytical programs.
She spearheaded creation of America’s Power Plan (APP), a platform to identify innovative thinking on decarbonization policy solutions for affordable, reliable electric power. Sonia now directs EI’s Power Sector Transformation work providing tailored advice on the transition to a decarbonized power system for utility regulators, governors’ staffs, power system operators, and more.
For Energy Policy Solutions, she leads the firm’s work identifying and designing the top energy policies to reduce emissions in the largest-emitting countries around the world. The program’s Energy Policy Simulator quantifies the cost and emissions impacts of various climate and energy policy combinations, and provides tailored advice on how to design those policies for maximum effectiveness.
Sonia also oversees strategy for EI’s California Climate Policy program which supports success in reaching the state’s 2030 decarbonization goals, and its Urban Sustainability program, which helps policymakers design low-carbon livable cities with a particular emphasis on China’s fast-growing cities.
Before Energy Innovation, Sonia managed global research at ClimateWorks Foundation, worked on the McKinsey carbon abatement cost curves, advised the International Energy Agency’s “Accelerating Technology Transitions” project, advised clean energy companies on technology and financial communications, and worked in accident prevention design engineering at a nuclear power plant. In 2019, she received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Education and Empowerment Award.
Sonia holds a B.S. from Haverford College in astronomy and physics, and an M.S. from Stanford University in engineering, focused on energy.
