Electric vehicle sales are growing faster than forecast thanks to rapid battery innovation, policy support, and automaker commitments. But research shows the transition must accelerate to meet global climate goals. To rapidly scale zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and cut emissions in line with a net-zero emissions by 2050 target, officials in the world’s major auto markets must enact a suite of stronger policies. This report provides a policy roadmap for capturing the climate, economic, and public health benefits of ZEVs including a top recommendation of well-designed ZEV sales standards of 60 percent of new passenger vehicles by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035, alongside increasingly stringent tailpipe emissions standards, equitable consumer incentives, and supply-chain development.
